VERY basic mixdown question

A VERY newbie question.

I have finished recording a couple of projects and would like to export them, but may wish to come back to remix after hearing them in the "real world". I assume but want to confirm that doing a mixdown and exporting a .WAV is really taking a snapshot of the project from a moment in time and does not in some way close the project or disable future edits. Am I correct? The model I have in my mind is that exporting a mixdown is like printing a word document. Yes?

anything else I should know before doing this?
