Which Sample Rate is Best for Recording My Band?

Post by cpcolwell » Wed Dec 17, 2014 6:57 pm

I have a question, is it better to record at a higher sample rate like 48k or 96k and mix it down to 44.1 for CD's or to start with 44.1 and use that? I know about the file size difference.

Can a 4 gen IPAD run 8-10 tracks of recorded instruments at higher sample rates without chocking? Can higher sample rates be distilled down to lower rates or is it not worth it for overall sound quality.

I do not want to find out the hard way, so I am asking the experts on this forum before I attempt to record.

Thanks in advance!

Just stick with 44.1kHz is what I usually tell people. In my experience there's very few instances where a higher sample rate is THAT much better, and you can loose that benefit or make things worse if you don't use a quality sample rate convertor to get back to 44.1 at the end. Better just to stick with the end sample rate most of the time.

Just my $0.02, it's a hot topic these days and I'm sure there's people who disagree.

That was my original thought to stay with 44.1. Thanks for your input!
