will the new 9 pin lightning connector pass the same data as the 30 pin connector? I heard somewhere that it will only output audio and couldn't be used to input audio. This would not allow the use of audio interfaces if true.

Re: ipad4 & Auria
The lightning connector has extended functionality over the 30 pin connector.
However, if you use a 30pin to Lightning adapter, not everything will work as it did before. In particular, I believe video signals are not passed over the adapter.
In addition, certain audio interfaces (for example the Tascam iU2) do not work with the adapter at all.
EDIT - WRONG {{BTW, Lightning has 16 pins. }}

The lightning connector works the same way as the old one did in terms of allowing you to use a USB audio interface. I believe the issues people were having with a few interfaces are related to the new coreAudio features in iOS 6. Hopefully these will get addressed in a new iOS update. Most interfaces have no trouble at all. I think it was only the iU2 at this point.

Thanks all for the clarification.
BTW its my understanding that the lightning connector has only 8 connectors, duplicated on the opposite side so the plug can go in either way.

You're right, I'm talking rubbish. The 8 pins go all the way through from one side to the other, so there are only 8, not 16. And the chassis counts as ground, so you could call it 9! I'll alter my original post.limey222 wrote: BTW its my understanding that the lightning connector has only 8 connectors, duplicated on the opposite side so the plug can go in either way.
