How to use midi keyboard with Auria

Post by jimhenry » Tue May 15, 2018 12:47 pm

Hi-

I am completely new using a midi keyboard so this is likely a very stupid question: how do you connect a keyboard while you're connected to your interface? A powered hub? If someone could talk me through it I'd really appreciate it. jh

Let's start with some basics:
-What kind (make/model) of keyboard do you have?

-What USB interface are you using?

Thanks for the quick reply.

I don't have a keyboard yet. I didn't want to purchase anything till I had a handle on what I was doing.

I use the focusrite scarlett 18i20

With the 18i20 you would need a USB powered hub if you were going to get a wired MIDI keyboard. It's as easy as plugging the keyboard into the hub and it should be automatically recognized by Auria Pro and ready to use.
If you were going to go the wired route, I would suggest looking at the Novation LaunchKey and Arturia Keylab series. They are both HUI compatible so you will be able to control functions in Auria with the buttons and knobs onboard.

You also have the option to bypass the wires and use a Bluetooth wireless keyboard. Very easy to setup and use. Turn on your iPad's Bluetooth and press one button in the Auria Pro MIDI settings to connect it.

Thanks so much Corey! So, the interface and the keyboard would get plugged into the powered hub...is that correct?

Yes, once the powered hub is connected to your CCK, you just plug the keyboard and audio interface in like any other USB devices. As long as your midi device is class compliant (most are nowadays) the detection is generally seamless and you’ll be up and running in no time. (I have an Atollo powered hub, Behringer UMC202, and a Nektar LX49+ keyboard, and everything works great with Auria and my other iOS daws).

I also have a Roli Seaboard Block, and it’s hard to overestimate how slick wireless midi keyboards can be for portability and ease of use!

How about an Alesis Q49 keyboard? I use the Apogee One for iPad/Mac

The Apogee One doesn't have a USB MIDI port (like the Duet and Quartet). You would need to use a USB powered hub and Apple CCK to add the Alesis while keeping the One connected. Kind of defeats the purpose of the simplicity of the One being an MFi interface.
